The Women's Day event changed something in me. For the first time in years, I felt seen, valued, and celebrated. The speakers, the food, the care packages — it was more than a day. It was a turning point. I left knowing that I mattered.
Program impact
For over 16 years, volunteers have risen early to pack bags of nutritious instant porridge distributed across the Hartbeespoort valley. At just R2 per meal, this simple act of faithfulness has fed thousands of families who would otherwise go without. "Seeing those bags go out — that's the miracle of the five loaves and two fish, right in our hands," says Pauli Koch.
When a teenage girl in Hartbeespoort had no means to complete her matric, Five Plus Two stepped in — covering fees, supplies, and providing a mentor to walk alongside her. She matriculated with distinction. Five others have followed. The program continues to find scholarships and opportunities for young people at critical crossroads in their lives.
After 12 annual events, the Children's Day has become a highlight on the ministry calendar. Children from vulnerable households arrive to receive a Bible-verse t-shirt, a hot KFC meal, and a bucket of sweets — but what they really take home is the knowledge that someone sees them, values them, and loves them. "The smiles are worth everything," says a long-time volunteer.
Through the after-school sponsorship program, 17 children currently attend a registered care facility each afternoon — receiving homework support, a nutritious meal, and a structured, nurturing environment. For their mothers, many of whom are working hard to rebuild their lives, this care is not just practical. It is life-giving peace of mind.
